Excited that Silicon Valley Congressman @RoKhanna is scheduled to be our guest on next week’s @CAHousingPod. He’s a co-author on @SenWarren’s new housing bill. We’re not experts on federal housing policy so please let @mlevinreports and I know what you’d like us to ask.

Why is he an enabler of NIMBYs in his own district in Cupertino? Why does he not support more transit-oriented housing in California when a public housing program the size of
@ewarren’s (which I support) is not politically viable anywhere in the near term given GOP Senate control3 replies 1 retweet 63 likes -

the way i see it: he will happily endorse local moderates over progressives (and NIMBYs over fair housing candidates) if that’s where the local political power is. completely rational decision if he wants to maintain his job security.

it’s not really his fault that community activism in Saratoga looks the way it does. if progressives wanted him to show courage on local issues, they should build local political power to the point that it would be in his interests to shift his alliances.

of course, it’s not reasonable to expect progressives to build that kind of power in nabes that are wealthy and exclusionary by design. it’s herrenvolk democracy. the only way to actually change conditions is overriding local control at the regional/state/federal level.

Exactly. The numbers will never exist in that community and will probably get worse and more elitist because it’s designed to be that way. So regional/state is the only way around it.

yep, this is basically my roundabout way of saying that i don’t expect Khanna to challenge his own constituents on this. i’m fine with him not taking super strong stands as long as he works to chip away at local control from a federal level.

Ehhhh, that’s not happening anytime soon. Why doesn’t he lend support to the most effectual of the some 260 odd housing bills floating through state leg this year?
