Kim-Mai Cutler Retweeted Palo Alto Weekly

I don’t even know where to begin with this. “SB 50 will gentrify the Peninsula faster.” This is the most expensive place to live in the United States.https://twitter.com/paloaltoweekly/status/1106629635578556416 …

Opinion: By mandating increased density through Senate Bill 50, the already expensive land in #PaloAlto will increase, and prices of housing and rents will follow. https://bit.ly/2HAbqYD  pic.twitter.com/CShKBjiJbO

I've never explored this, but the concept of induced demand is fairly generally accepted when applied to traffic. Is there an analog for housing?

I mean.... driving on a road (and parking) is usually provided by the government for free to people. Housing is the most expensive thing we spend money on, probably in our entire lives.

Driving doesn't seem free to me. Subsidized, sure, but purchase / lease, maintenance, fuel / watts are real costs aren't they? Maybe it doesn't apply in PA but if you accept induced demand for traffic it seems like it's at least possible for housing.

When governments expand highway lanes, are those lanes usually free to use for the driver (assuming they have a car & gas)? Does it cost more to drive on a road in Palo Alto than Stockton?

If it's a toll road. But could you explain your point? Mine is that maybe all that would happen if you build more housing is that you get more people but no reduction in cost. Often a cost reduction is a stated reason for building. I'm asking if the impacts are well understood.

depends how much latent demand for housing there is. eventually more supply will soften prices.
