Driving doesn't seem free to me. Subsidized, sure, but purchase / lease, maintenance, fuel / watts are real costs aren't they? Maybe it doesn't apply in PA but if you accept induced demand for traffic it seems like it's at least possible for housing.
When governments expand highway lanes, are those lanes usually free to use for the driver (assuming they have a car & gas)? Does it cost more to drive on a road in Palo Alto than Stockton?
