"Philadelphia is now burning about 1/2 of its 1.5M residents’ recycling material in an incinerator that converts waste to energy. The Memphis international airport still has recycling bins around the terminals, but every collected can, bottle and newspaper is sent to a landfill."https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1107037509517754369 …

Not sure the economics make sense for a startup, need a lot of investment up front and there are a lot of different areas that need innovation. Maybe a grant / subsidy approach would be a great way to encourage new solutions, X prize style?

Yes, I could definitely see that, but maybe for not every single approach to this problem.

Or it’s an externality consumer-facing companies have been getting away with not paying. We should have a system more like Germany’s where producers have to be responsible for product end-of-life.

I work in the industry and is it so true. We as a nation fail to separate properly, 2: We do not rinse out our glass and plastic's which is a biohazard. 3: Paper food conainers is consider as garbage because of oil and plastic lining that cannot be prrocessed.

A few working on it, ie. CleanRobotics and Everest Labs. It's not an easy problem, though (robotics, computer vision, and business model challenges... hard to sell to municipalities/loss leaders or non-priority business lines in customers and high capex/friction to full stack.)
