Not sure the economics make sense for a startup, need a lot of investment up front and there are a lot of different areas that need innovation. Maybe a grant / subsidy approach would be a great way to encourage new solutions, X prize style?

Or it’s an externality consumer-facing companies have been getting away with not paying. We should have a system more like Germany’s where producers have to be responsible for product end-of-life.

I work in the industry and is it so true. We as a nation fail to separate properly, 2: We do not rinse out our glass and plastic's which is a biohazard. 3: Paper food conainers is consider as garbage because of oil and plastic lining that cannot be prrocessed.

A few working on it, ie. CleanRobotics and Everest Labs. It's not an easy problem, though (robotics, computer vision, and business model challenges... hard to sell to municipalities/loss leaders or non-priority business lines in customers and high capex/friction to full stack.)
