Right but his point is that sometimes in the effort to prevent even one problem you cause other problems. Your points don't cut perfectly acceptable each other.

The regulation of sin taxes (not #syntaxes). You cannot idealize social philosophy, merely optimize.

Huh? For clarification, I don't think we're disagreeing. But you asked for an example of unintended consequences. To which I replied sin taxes. I realize that could appear that I'm questioning taxes at large, but I'm not.

I'm merely saying that sin taxes, especially ones that are intently regressive, have plenty of unintended consequences.

So to get @lpolovets and your thread back on track you posed that sometimes regulation is to help just one person. To a certain extent that rings similar to when institutions over-systematize policy to the extent that the policy is more burdensome than the effect it's preventing.

Example for FDA: 1) AFAIK you can't try experimental treatments even if you're terminally ill. 2) Lots of drugs are RX only, can't be bought from outside of US, etc even if patient wants to take the risk. (Dealt with this one in my family.)

Is your argument that we shouldn’t have an FDA?

No. I think there should be requirements on drug research, manufacturing, etc. Honestly I'm not very informed on FDA, but a few thoughts: 1) it should work faster (more staff?). Drug approvals are so high leverage. 2) ppl should be able to accept risks of drugs w/o govt approval.

          1) Right to try has now been passed. But generally people familiar with the industry have been very skeptical of the rule (it takes advantage of desperate patients)

That's great! I didn't know that. Last looked into this about 5 years ago, which according to Wikipedia is right when Right to Try laws were starting to pass.
