It feels like a grab bag of hand-waving complaints about anything that made the front of the NYT tech section. App stores! Own-label products! Data!

That’s a poor read. Delete the specifics and she’s articulating a coherent theory around “platform utilities.” You can disagree with the theory or specific proposals that she might derive from it, but to do so you must first understand the argument.

Giving a name to the idea that a company can have a store and sell things in that store is meaningful. Banning it outright (not only in cases of abuse) if the company is successful seems poorly thought out. Using Google Search vs Ads & Apple App Store as examples even worse.

I suspect an actionable version of this concept will get into that. It may indeed still be a terrible idea. As we’re still at the “is there a real problem and might we imagine a policy framework to address” stage of the debate, I think it’s more constructive to focus on that.

Unlike press conferences, where you answer the question you wished they asked, rather than the question they did ask.

I’m old enough to remember when Obama ran for two years on an evolving healthcare plan & then spent nearly two years in office working out the details. It is probably good Medium didn’t exist then. He might’ve derailed the whole thing at the outset.

Elizabeth Warren is enough of a policy wonk (as evidenced by her very detailed speech on foreign policy) to have a very specific plan ready to go. She's also enough of a politician to know when to keep an argument high level. Platform dominance in telecom destroys innovation.

Warren is an actual Senator, who held actual legislative jobs prior to running, who proposed & established the CFPB in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. If you have specific critiques of her approach, I'd suggest talking to @openmarkets, which has a close relationship w/ her

Open Markets: “we need anti-trust to support small businesses like - [checks notes] - Hollywood studios.” These guys have never met a tech company they couldn’t claim was a monopoly — or an entrenched incumbent they couldn’t support. Now, apparently, they’re targeting Netflix. pic.twitter.com/dNqOprbTwn
