Indeed. Sometimes breakups make sense, and sometimes they don’t, but you do actually have to do the analysis, and not shout ‘break them up!’ as though it’s the only answer

She’s not dumb; she’s a student of history. I suspect she writes the simplistic messaging to get the headline across and differentiate from other candidates but is well aware that most recent cases have resulted in other kinds of settlements pending more investigation.

That’s a poor read. Delete the specifics and she’s articulating a coherent theory around “platform utilities.” You can disagree with the theory or specific proposals that she might derive from it, but to do so you must first understand the argument.

Giving a name to the idea that a company can have a store and sell things in that store is meaningful. Banning it outright (not only in cases of abuse) if the company is successful seems poorly thought out. Using Google Search vs Ads & Apple App Store as examples even worse.

I suspect an actionable version of this concept will get into that. It may indeed still be a terrible idea. As we’re still at the “is there a real problem and might we imagine a policy framework to address” stage of the debate, I think it’s more constructive to focus on that.
