Meanwhile, ideas on the table in Berlin ... * $2 billion annually for public transit * Landlords not allowed to own more than 3k units * Five-year rent freeze * 100 million euro public purchase of private housing stock https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2019/02/berlin-subway-bus-streetcar-transit-master-plan/583747/ … &https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/02/berlin-germany-housing-rent-how-much-price-landlord-policies/582898/ …

$100M euro purchasing is kind of small though TBH considering that our city bonds are typically 3X that size for a city 1/4th the size of Berlin.

Isn't Oakland like 60% renters? One would think renters there could be better organized to demand more affordable housing.
-
That’s why Oakland has rent control. But Oakland also has no money in part because it lives inside a federal system that prioritizes detached single family home ownership and suburban sprawl to the detriment of urban/city funding.

A LVT is, in effect, a full rebate to tenants of that part of housing costs that currently makes housing unaffordable. Also optimally efficient. So if tenants a majority, then such a tax is a no-brainer. So why no discussion?
