I think the big problem is that it’s sprawl for the rich, shared rooms for the poor.

On that note, the emergence of "communal urban living" in 21st century US is ironically analogous to 20th century urban USSR. My parents grew up with kitchens/bathrooms shared among multiple families in the heart of Moscow https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communal_apartment …

On that note, my family came from a culture where multiple generations lived under one roof, enabling in-home affordable childcare. The horror.
