There has to be a better way... and a middle ground between sacrificing the desire for privacy and a space of one's own and creating vast tracts of single-family properties. But the co-living phenomenon seems to be a poor substitute for an actually affordable apartment.

I think the big problem is that it’s sprawl for the rich, shared rooms for the poor.

Sprawl is when a person working at a 160 square foot cubicle goes home to a 10,000 foot lot. Modernity is when "" 60 square foot open open desk "" their share of a 400 square foot apartment. The goal is probably cubicles and family-sized 1000 square foot apartments.

And in practice, the only city that solves this is Tokyo because Japanese people are willing to do 90 minute commutes.
