Yah, kind of weird that the big policy pushes for upzoning near transit have been exclusively focused on residential. I mean, you can live right over BART but if your office is five miles from a station, you're still gonna use the freeway for your commute.
Brian, by that logic there would be no east bay BART commuters to SF
? SF has lots of its office capacity close to BART, doesn't it?
Yeah and to be fair, YIMBYs wanted more housing relative to office in Central SOMA even though there is also a credible counterpoint that that should be even more of a regional office hub.
Seems like there's also a credible case that there should be more office growth directed to suburban BART parking lots. The system's already operating at/near capacity for SF-bound commutes, but could add a lot of riders going the other way without increased investment.
(I know that's public land that's one of the few places where there's opportunity for major affordable housing -- just saying that 1/2
The commuter transit system we have:
1.Was designed to move scattered people in the suburbs to concentrated jobs in the city. (Car
lot
train
office)
2. Is set up terribly to move people from concentrated housing to suburban office parks (why we have private tech shuttles.)2/3
Yeah I see that. But also, it’s way easier to make affordable housing on land we already own and can secure at a discount to market-rate land.
