automotive manufacturing jobs in 1992 look very different than the bifurcated urban labor market of today. Minimum wage service workers (that are seeing lower upward mobility than in prior generations) and their elected reps rightfully have a lot of ?s: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/11/upshot/big-cities-low-skilled-workers-wages.html …

obviously not. I'm saying if a big co like Amazon comes to Queens, they need to be really smart about engaging and thinking through what's in it for low-income residents/service workers. They failed at that, so they got what they got.

What are options for what's in it for service workers? Clearly, one option on offer was all of the new Amazon employees spending money on restaurants, transport, entertainment, insurance, etc. But you clearly have something else in mind so am curious what?

Yes but how much of the extra economic activity makes it into workers’ pockets and will it offset the corresponding increase in housing prices?

If an increase in house prices would happen here, then it's going to happen regardless from other businesses moving in. Amazon has nothing to do with that - it's the local government's responsibility to ensure more housing is built.

That depends on the nature of those businesses doesn’t it? High paying engineering jobs would spike demand for real estate in a way few other industries would. Agree that local government should build housing.

Doesn't matter. The government can get creative in the short term while housing is built: take some of all that income tax revenue from the high paying jobs and subsidise those in need.

What part of cities in California are not allowed to collect their own income taxes do you not understand?
