I seriously doubt that a train between SF and LA is not economically viable. You are really arguing about the payback period over the lifetime.

> the bond measure that California voters approved stipulated that the train must pay for its own operation (no operational subsidies). That's exceedingly rare. Just two high-speed rail lines worldwide operate at a profit: Paris to Lyon & Osaka to Tokyo.https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-bullet-train-california-problems-20190213-story.html?outputType=amp&__twitter_impression=true …

This. Almost everyone ignores the ongoing losses that most HSR lines incur. (Rail is losing market share in Europe.) Operating subsidies may be justified, but where will the money come from in CA’s budget?

But what does it cost to build? Cost is the major factor - or rather the only factor..

usa could build the world's fastest train and the tracks from ny to sf in 12 months if we wanted to.

The plan was never for high speed rail. It was a loser before it started. Calling it high speed rail was a lie.
