Not all politicians have the same constituents. Cuomo obviously wanted it, the more local politicians who are accountable to more working class people and tenants of Queens are logically acting in a different subset of constituents’ interests.

Interesting take, but doesn't Amazon backing out so quickly indicate they don't value those network effects as much as the subsidies the city was offering?

I think they realized it wasn’t gonna happen. (Weirdly, I’m not surprised it didn’t happen. I was more surprised when I heard from De Blasio folks that they were certain it would happen and that it wouldn’t get derailed.)

Yeah. NYC doesn't need to give tax breaks to compete. They don't even need to collect trash properly or make the trains run on time. They're sitting on a big enough positive externality to win the economic game. Only democratic voice can make NYC better at this point.

NYC obviously doesn't need Amazon but Amazon likely doesn't need NYC HQ2 as well. Interesting Amazon also said today they will stop expanding in Seattle. Makes one wonder if Amazon overestimated its need so used local opposition as an excuse to back out.
-
Not sure if it is overshoot or just not wanting to deal with critics. Amazon has recently been involved in deals for a number of properties in Bellevue in the last year. Could mean they plan to expand in Seattle area but would rather deal with a different city government.

This was true in years past; with technological innovations (VOIP enabling Skype & others, Slack, etc) the network effect argument holds less water today & will continue to affect that argument. Collaboration & network affect are changing, even by using platforms like Twitter.
