We're going to make high-speed rail a reality for CA. We have the capacity to complete the rail between Merced and Bakersfield. We will continue our regional projects north and south. Finish Phase 1 enviro work. Connect the Central Valley to other parts of the state.

For those who want to walk away: Abandoning high speed rail means we will have wasted billions of dollars with nothing but broken promises and lawsuits to show for it. I'm not interested in sending $3.5B in federal funding--exclusively allocated for HSR--back to the White House.

Well, whatever is going on, @jerrybrowngov was fatalist about housing on the California Coast but optimistic about HSR (also opening up a state housing solution in the Central Valley) and @gavinnewsom seems fatalist about HSR to the major cities and optimistic about housing.

Fake news. We’re building high-speed rail, connecting the Central Valley and beyond. This is CA’s money, allocated by Congress for this project. We’re not giving it back. The train is leaving the station — better get on board! (Also, desperately searching for some wall $$??) https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1095857587344551936 …

Do you think this is just a temporary measure so the state can reevaluate how to more cost-effectively connect HSR to LA and SF while the line connecting Bakersfield and Merced gets built? Or do you think the dream of connecting SF-LA on HSR is effectively dead?

I mean, I heard him say that the economy of the Central Valley is more dynamic than people realize, but I can't imagine that it's so dynamic that trains connecting Bakersfield to Merced would achieve full (or even half) of its daily occupancy load.

Newsom said what the #cahsr business plan said: there is only $ to build the Central Valley and finish some “book end” projects. It’s just news he said it without spin. Those saying it before were “naysayers”, but now, we it’s cool to call a spade a spade.
