You’re talking about quantity and I’m talking about quality. Low quality housing and food is not the answer. I see no reason orgs like Raphael House and St. Vincent de Paul can’t scale. Do you?

Ask Raphael House why they don't/can't scale. Ask them how hard it is to go and do fundraisers and banquets, and all of that every year for basic family shelter services, and ask them how hard it would be to 10 or 100X that knowing the Bay Area donor community.

There’s no reason they couldn’t expand if they wanted to. There’s no reason others couldn’t do the same.

I get where you’re coming from, but when the scales of philanthropy to government’s ability to raise are 12:1 I think you’re simply underestimating the reality of how much the opt-in (to philanthropy) changes giving.

Government is raising money from taxes. Instead of more forced taxation, they could provide more tax credits for developers who build in low income areas or orgs who donate food.

So again, I don’t disagree in principle. Markets work great for allocating certain resources. In the case of food, no market incentive exists to give food directly to those in poverty at the scale SNAP does.

I volunteer for an org that coordinates food donations from all the larger grocers. I see so much quality food go to landfill because there’s just too much of it. Food waste is a huge problem in America. We could abolish food stamps if every city organized food donations well.

I’d really honestly be interested in seeing the scale of that program. Absolutely there is waste in the food system. And absolutely govt has inefficiencies. But your sense of the magnitudes of these seems way out of empirical proportion.

Just Google food waste in America. You don’t need me to show you anything.

A lot of that food goes to the food bank networks who distribute it. And if you can solve the logistics problem associated with getting that to everyone who needs it, I'd be *really* happy. Until then, we have a really effective anti-poverty program operating at 12x the scale.

is it really only 12X the scale? like 40M people?

It's bigger, but since there's a clear data point of meals provided by Feeding America and meals provided by SNAP I'll use that conservative estimate because it's actual data.

I know a stat I've seen is that the govt safety net is $470 billion and charitable donations toward a safety net are $42 billion. So, in general, 10x is not an inaccurate order of magnitude in terms of the scale of govt vs philanthropy.
