Yes, I remember the late 90s and early 2000s when the Left was the side that championed free speech and open discussion. While I don't things have necessarily "flipped," it's clear that the Left no longer fits that description. Free speech seems to live in the center now.

That could be it. Perhaps whatever side has the most cultural power at any given moment becomes less open to "free speech," because they perceive it as a threat to their cultural power.
