I’m at Davos event with Sheryl Sandberg. She was just introduced as a person who’s figured out “how to make money off of people’s data.” The crowd laughed. Me:pic.twitter.com/1yj4gSXR2V

Sandberg: “I think people are suspicious..” of surfacing advertising while also protecting user data. She reaffirms Facebook doesn’t sell your data “no matter how many times it’s written.” Later adds that Fb has been bad at explaining its business model.

Everyone is standing for the interview and surrounding Sandberg and the interviewer. This feels like rich white people fight club.pic.twitter.com/r2t0OdDaGm

Sandberg almost tried to give a bad example of sharing on the fly but then stopped herself. She’s usually very well prepared. I think her PR ppl just pooped themselves.

Interviewer asks about a site called whotracksme which he claims shows FB tracks about a quarter of web traffic. Sandberg dodges on the topic of tracking and says the company is going to unveil “clear history”. She then glosses over data that is shared back by the like button.

Sandberg: “If we charged for our product, almost all the people wouldn’t be able to use it.” Says that charging users to use FB would also hurt small businesses that depend on the platform for marketing. Pretty smart politician’s talking point.

Sandberg: there’s a lot of angst and anxiety about the power held by tech companies. (She then compares it to the doubt around the printing press after its invention. I’m not a history buff, but were ppl that scared about the printing press?)
