If you spend 40 years restricting who can be housed there to the point where only wealthy people can afford to show up in the first place, well, that is the outcome of the system you’ve designed.

Pretty much, yep. But also, building more market rate housing won’t address that any time in the near future, so we’re a bit stuck. We have to do it, but we’ll likely get even more so in the meantime.

One of my fears is that we’ll build more housing for housing speculators who have a vested interest in ensuring housing prices only go up, and the problem only exacerbates. It’s why anti-speculation + new housing feel like they have to go hand in hand.
