In all the conversation about PG&E's looming bankruptcy, I feel like Californians grossly underestimate the costs of adapting our energy grid to climate change/wildfire. It's $4-5M/mile to underground lines, $5K/stump to remove hazardous trees. PG&E did 451K of them after 2016.

the endpoint of Wiener's idea to have a SF power company is that the cities get their own municipal power utilities and the rural areas are screwed. maybe that's OK, I dunno. (obviously a lot of rural power infra serves the urban centers, but a lot doesn't)

Keeping a few high voltage lines clear from trees is a lot easier than all the last mile infrastructure needed to serve rural communities. There's a reason the original rural electrification buildout needed federal subsidies.

Have to bring more generation local to reduce cost per mile on transmission as well as fire risk. Rooftop solar can meet some demand but obviously not enough... What options are there? We need to reboot National Conservation Corps for a number of economic and environmntl. reasons
