(To be clear, I'm referring to the part about taking a red-eye from Philadelphia to San Francisco, getting to Palo Alto by 6 a.m. and having a contract to buy a house around there by noon.)

This also depends on deep and wide social networks and hiring that is about as far from neutral as possible. Those networks and connections were exclusive, even more so than today.

Sorry, shoulda been more specific. I'm mostly talking about the part where he lands in SF off a redeye and is in contract to buy a house by noon.
