You have no evidence of that. Significant government and military funding is a foundational part of the creation of Silicon Valley.

Maybe re-allocating all the budget spent in military interventions abroad while the marginal tax rate was logical?

There is literally only one data point that the “high govt spending leads to innovation” folks rely on and ignore every other instance of high govt spending killing innovation. It is a frustrating debate.

Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Brazil all have high govt spending. Hong Kong doesn’t. The science is settled on this.

Whipping out Venezuela is like the Godwin's law of Internet conversations about the relationship between the market and the state.

Not really the same. A key difference is that many on the left would whip out Venezuela as a positive example when things appeared superficially to be going well. So it’s fair game to be using it as a counterexample, certainly when debating interlocutors that previously did that.

Who is "many" and "on the left"? I think I maybe remember exactly one Venezuelan person who said that to me 12 years ago, who then actually literally ended up working for the Chavez regime after grad school and then fled to Chile.

Yeah. There are tons of famous examples. I just googled for thirty seconds and was reminded of several. But as to the “many” part of my comment, support for Chavez and Venezuela was a fairly normal position among folks on the European and American left in the early days. I recall

The sourcing when I Google “Hugo Chavez Joseph stiglitz” is Mises, Cafe Hayek, Reason & a publication of the Manhattan Institute. But when you look at publications from that exact year like NBC, it says he praises Chavez’ plan for a regional bank as competition to

https://www.sfgate.com/politics/amp/Americans-in-Venezuela-to-support-leftist-leader-2666149.php … It was everywhere. Debating one quote or another is pointless. It was a commonly held view on the left. I also talked optimistically about Venezuela the early days. It was how folks talked about the regime. Naively. Willfully blind to the negatives.

Like i say, your personal experience may be different. But I was active in left wing politics from college in the 90s through much of the early 2000s. I’m telling you, for whatever it’s worth, in my experience the widespread default position was support for Venezuela and Chavez.
