Who is "many" and "on the left"? I think I maybe remember exactly one Venezuelan person who said that to me 12 years ago, who then actually literally ended up working for the Chavez regime after grad school and then fled to Chile.

Yeah. There are tons of famous examples. I just googled for thirty seconds and was reminded of several. But as to the “many” part of my comment, support for Chavez and Venezuela was a fairly normal position among folks on the European and American left in the early days. I recall

Then your memory is different to mine. In my experience it was super common throughout the left wing western intelligentsia. There’s a lot of revisionism going on now that it ended badly.

A short google finds Chomsky, Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson, Joseph Stieglitz. And a basketload of the usual gobby lefty celebrities. But it went beyond famous voices. It was pretty normalized. It was an easy trap to fall into. There was a period it seemed to be all rosy.
