How do we prove that that is true?
We can shift metaphors but that’s like arguing that we can have a system that allows chemical factories to dump waste into rivers and then blame the individual people downstream who have few options outside of drinking the polluted water.

Don't see the connection: citizens decide whether or not to participate social media, and what kind of civility to show in their participation. Unlike your pollution victims, they can decide whether or not to drink.

That is not true. Social media can incentivize less civil discourse and in fact is helping to elect or put uncivil people into positions of power globally, which is affecting virtually everyone, including people who choose not to directly participate in social media.
