The whole point of Alex’s thread and Kim’s (accurate) comment on Kara’s sometimes overly-simplistic take is that “just try to be ethical.” Says nothing about *how*, and conveniently sidesteps how difficult the *how* is.

Also, the onus is on us — *us* — as a Democratic body politic to discuss ourselves how we want our speech norms to evolve as technology changes and then subordinate private actors to those legal norms rather than handing over that judgment to an opaque, unaccountable entity.

Moreover, the reality is that American legal speech norms are incredibly permissive around hate speech. In fact, the US is exceptional among Western countries in its protections for hate speech. Private US tech cos over time have gone beyond US legal norms on hate speech.
