You can hide costs in subsidies. You can’t control prices. That’s not a real thing. They will keep increasing above inflation until productivity increases in line with other industries.

I'm not so sure if price inflation at universities is entirely due to productivity differences. So much seems to have to do with a strong lack of price competition.

Any theory that suggests non-profits are over-charging needs to adequately explain where that money is going. With low salaries for employees and no profits, I think that’s difficult.

This is well documented. Look at administrator:student ratio, building/maintenance costs, etc. Every expense category has gone up sharply relative to enrollment and inflation.

If it’s all unnecessary fluff, surely some universities would do things differently and track inflation. We don’t see this. Costs are up everywhere, independent of jurisdictional subsidies, rankings, etc.

When people say every university is engaging in wasteful spending, I hear a conspiracy theory. I struggle to believe in conspiracy theories in capitalism involving at least thousands of independent actors.

Universities are doing what they need to in order to attract students in an unlimited debt-fueled tuition bubble

Did anyone ever explain why there are so many administrators now? How did that happen?
