Can't find Osaka area railway financials, not sure how they make money nowadays. But, noteworthy: transportation-centric JRs have less regulated fares (Shinkansen fares are free market, commuter fares not), so diversification might be a second-best strategy when fares are capped

Also, w/current route, idk how useful it'll be even to Sacramento. Phase 2 will be delayed given higher Phase 1 cost of crossing at the Tehachapi Pass vs. Tejon, and crossing at Pacheco instead of Altamont makes SF-Sac travel times longer and therefore less competitive w/driving

I'm not a HSR hater, I think the corridor is perfect for it and we should build something, but the CHSRA has made some very poor decisions on the one hand, and some people are overselling the project even under ideal management on the other
