NYC <> Chicago is served by an endless stream of 2.5 hour flights that cost $42. But okay sure we could build a 4.5 hour train for a bajillion dollars instead of all the infrastructure we actually need.https://twitter.com/yfreemark/status/1076213195319185412 …

HSR isn’t even necessarily about a super fast connection between SF and LA. It’s basically a plan to unlock much of the flatland in central CA, make it jobs-commute accessible — because long-term, that may be the only place that California’s population can grow.

Economics of HSR make this impossible. Demand for Palmdale-LA travel is WAY higher than for NorCal-Palmdale, so every ticket of the former you sell is a ticket of the latter that you likely can’t, meaning the former ticket price ends up having to be closer to full NorCal-LA price

There’s a reason that SNCF wanted to come in and cut out a lot of the intermediate stops. Around the world, HSR isn’t used for commuting by anybody who couldn’t afford to live in the high-cost areas if they wanted to

There’s Palmdale-LA and there’s Fresno-San Jose. If you parse Jerry Brown’s comments and experience from the last 40 years, it basically feels like he’s concluded adding more density on coasts is more impossible than just building HSR and effectively growing new cities in CA.

Well thank god for term limits then I guess, because he’s wrong about that

yeah, the idea of commuter HSR bailing out coastal California cities from their unwillingness to grow is a terrible one one, pretty sure the capacity levels are about an order of magnitude off and two hour train commutes beat two hour car commutes, but it’s still miserable

I’m not debating the idea itself at this moment but I think I’m correct on interpreting Jerry’s intent and assessment of the situation. What do you think?

yeah, I think you’re reading Jerry right and I’ve seen that idea elsewhere, I just think it’s very badly wrong and something of a moral abdication
