Was debating this issue in my head. Concerns about nepotism in government are valid. But as an elected official myself, if I fail to speak to defend a family member because there may be political consequences, I don't deserve to be in office.

Given the precedent that the president is setting with his children, I'm not sure I would use *that* particular line of argument.

Agreed, a lot of the outrage around this is odd to me...frankly I'd do the same if it were my brother... esp if I believed his crimes were result of addiction issues.

The thing is that it opens a can of worms, having to do with the nickname issue and the alibi issue. It's certainly diff than the average. About her being Mayor now, I don't think it matters. This is time to ask for commutation. She wd have written the same letter as a Supe...

I think her using her mayoral title on the letter was in poor taste, but she had every right to make the request as a citizen. The real red flag to me is the false alibi she gave during the trial - I'm really surprised that her perjury didn't come up during the mayoral campaign.

I'm sure you would feel similarly if, say it were gavin newsom that wrote this letter asking lenience for his brother who pushed the 25 year old girl out into traffic after a robbery, and who was crushed to death by a car.
