PSA @nytimes: Focusing on what female founders wear rather than the substance of their businesses is not the way to support more female founders. Way to undermine all the great #metoo
reporting that @ktbenner @jodikantor @mega2e @emilysteel did last year.https://nyti.ms/2EvxpiC

I want to know what women, and men, choose to wear and I bristle at the suggestion that it’s not a worthy discussion. The way one presents him or herself speaks volumes. The people highlighted here clearly put a lot of time into their appearances, why not celebrate that?

Another woman investor I highly respect saw this and immediately felt, “I refuse to click on this nytimes headline. It is insulting,” which I think is an impt sentiment to validate, share. I also shared
@choire’s context that this is an ongoing column rather than a singular piece1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

I’d also be curious to look at historical data on this regular feature to understand how equally it examines women’s fashion versus men or non-binary.

Lastly, as a newer Bay Area resident (?) you probably have noticed that NorCal culture has a highly different attitude to style than NY or LA, where Sophia is based.

Sophia’s home base is irrelevant, as the women featured here are from all over the world. Many, many men and women love and appreciate the art of self expression through clothes. For women to disparage other women for enjoying fashion moves us backward—not forward.

And the suggestion that this discredits Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting is, frankly, absurd. Women can be strong, they can have a voice, they can speak out against wrongdoings. And, if they chose, they can care about fashion! One doesn’t negate the other. We contain multitudes!

I think you’re conflating me generally disparaging women for enjoying fashion and style with being concerned that this particular article (absent the knowledge/context of it being a regular feature) focuses more on dress than the fundamentals of these womens’ businesses.

It’s the style section! And they all got a chance to plug their businesses. I think it’s a win for all sides, truly.

I think Sophia would probably see it that way! I also think this conversation is worth starting! Lots of interesting replies and thoughts.
