Often when people think their governing institutions are incompetent (or in this case a quasi-public/private utility), it’s bc the people themselves haven’t given a clear mandate (& necessary resources/$ for that mandate). Not excusing PG&E, just a dynamic I often notice.https://twitter.com/RobertGammon/status/1063975397992198144 …

PG&R is already getting a lot of criticism for not turning off the power before the horrific Camp fire. But folks should remember the reaction just a couple weeks ago when the utility did turn off power -- and no fire occurred. https://www.mtdemocrat.com/news/placerville-city-council-damns-pge-for-power-shutdown/ …

The options are expensive. Powerline undergrounding is $4-5M per mile in the Bay Area. Tree removal is $2-3K per stump.

$4M per mile? Jeez, you could put solar and a basic battery system on 150+ homes for that money. Plus powerlines don't make power, still have to pay fuel costs on top of that.

If you have 50-100 houses per mile and break the cost over 30 years, it’s like $1,600/yr per parcel. https://www.cityofberkeley.info/Clerk/City_Council/2018/02_Feb/Documents/2018-02-20_WS_Item_03_Conceptual_Study_for_Undergrounding_-_Pres.aspx …

Wild that we're so close to the financial break even point where it'd be cheaper for any new development to just be electrically self-sufficient rather than extend the grid. The Net Zero new home rule for 2020 is most of the way to that!

Thanks! If the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica, farms near Chico and community colleges across California can make solar + batteries pencil out already then there is huge opportunity for great self-sufficiency

I would love to read a blog post illustrating how it financially pencils against other options.

And I mean this at a more systemic level versus just an individual business or household.

Thanks. Real rough way to ballpark what we're looking for would be to take these numbers then add battery storage costs on top.

Seems like a good report for the CPUC or the CEC to put together!
