Malibu isn't exactly full of people pushed out of the urban core by exclusionary zoning, tho. They ARE the exclusionary zone.

I get where this is coming from, and don’t disagree, but are the wildlife communities inhabited by folks who were excluded from urban locales? Paradise’s population has been consistent for decades.

some of these people seem like they moved there from the Bay Area....https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/14/us/wildfire-victims.html …

This is an excellent point. The same people who talk shit on SUVs / etc. for baking the planet push people into harm's way of climate change impacts with their NIMBYism.

I’d like for Californians to fix this by developing in established urban areas, but, barring that, build new high-density (car-free, car-lite, or at least full-cost-to-the-car-owner) charter cities and towns. Surround these dense spaces with a fire-smart greenbelt.

Yeah they’re not going to be able to build enough homes to rehouse the thousands of displaced people, and there’s not enough housing in the entire state for them

Not every prob results from Bay Area land use. Many ppl, if not most, in the Sierra foothills interface areas live there bc they prefer it. Real challenge is how to discourage ppl living in fire-danger areas. Insurance premiums may do it.

Underrated tweet. We are also exporting this problem to other states as those who prefer urban wildland interface living move and urbanize other wildland areas in Oregon, WA, Idaho for starters. Without design treatments that preserve open space / defensible fire areas
