So leave the rent seekers out of it and build public housing. Change building codes so it's not so ridiculously expensive to build. Housing is more important than some damn developer's profits.
I'm generally favorable to public housing, but our federal govt abdicated from it in the 80s, then CA state affordable housing $$ is negligible. I don't know what it is now, but 2-3 yrs ago it was like $400M/yr. SF raised $300M w/ Prop A in 2014, but we're almost out of money now
Great! Let’s raise some taxpayer subsidies to make that happen! Maybe we could tax the companies benefitting from this tech boom rather than paying them the subsidies. If only there was some way to put that to a vote...
