I absolutely believe this. I think kids are meant to be raised en masse by a group of moms, which would be made easier by more communal living (co-housing, shared yards, grandparents in the home).

My socially-conservative-ish mom is very sympathetic to this

I've never looked at it through this lens but it always did feel off to me that a tucked away house with decent commute to do things was considered the ideal family raising environment.

in grad school, before kids, we lived in a duplex with 8 people, very communal we now rent a condo, which has shared green space, but a shared kitchen would be even better

Not just because of the housework. Also because of the driving. Parents who lives where walk/bike/transit are options don’t need to spend hours per day driving their teens to activities and school.

My mother raised six kids in a drive-everywhere suburban neighborhood. I thought my mom was an introvert because she didn’t have friends. Little did I know she was too dang tired and isolated to have girlfriends to hang with.

This is the big lie of the suburbs. My husband would have gone nuts staying home in our old neighborhood. Our new neighborhood is still single-family but much denser and he and the kids have tons of friends in the neighborhood. Communal living would be still better...pic.twitter.com/XbBB3N4d2R
