I spent my adolescence in a homeless shelter and I’ve spent my entire life since trying to figure out finance and complex systems. My biggest take-away from the last 10 years? Good intentions ≠ Good outcomes.pic.twitter.com/NNhGS0JybT

But... would you have rather spent your teenaged years sleeping on the street? There are only roughly 1,100 shelter beds for 7,000 people in SF. They are generally always ~95% full and there’s a three month waiting list. At least you had a shelter.
Yes because I lived in a town that wasn’t messed up from first principles. I’ve spent the last year helping a 98 year old homeless woman navigate shelters here. The system is a joke. There are 70 homeless organizations in SF that pass around responsibility.
you can't redesign 150+ year-old cities with close to 1 million people from "First Principles." That's not how governance works.
There's also finally now a Coordinated Entry system. The 70 orgs question is an interesting one. Most have specialities, eg families, veterans, transitional age youth, seniors, etc., all of which are very different populations with very different needs from a service perspective.
what was your town? It wasn't London? If so, how big was it? Perhaps in that situation it makes sense to have 1 single org. Large cities are more complicated with diverse populations.
