That they were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote is irrelevant to their legitimacy. They passed the same legal process as others (both the presidents and the justices)

"Legitimacy" is an inherently subjective and contestable notion, and the fact that the U.S. electoral system routinely coughs up popular-vote losers certainly decreases its legitimacy with a meaningful chunk of the public.
