I hear what you’re saying, but if the jobs/housing ratio is better than the rest of the city, and if it has set-aside below market units, I think it’s still think it will help more than hurt. Of course a different project could help more…

That's starting to sound like asking for the highest percentage rather than number of affordable units...people live in a unit, not a ratio :)

Well, sure, but I’m just saying that I’m not sure if the project “worsens” the housing situation. I agree a different project might help more!

The Vallco project will bring in a few thousand more workers to Cupertino than it will house. The city doesn't have plans to build a few thousand homes elsewhere. Therefore, those people are going to either displace an existing resident in Cupertino or other nearby city.

Prop 13 split roll will help retire a bunch of old commercial buildings and those will become housing as well.

There's also the little detail of Vallco businesses closing, thereby shifting those jobs elsewhere.

The Long Timers say that Vallco failed only because the current owner forced all the stores to fail so they could convert it to profitable housing. (Because... you know... Sears, Macys, JCP, are really thriving otherwise...)
