Our ballot prop system seems so broken. How can legislatures plan budgets when they're at the whims of voters?

What numbers? When I googled it the poll numbers seemed to be against prop 6.

There were multiple polls in that file showing it teetering, some pro-repeal, some maintaining. Just was depressingly 50-50 to me.

50% supporting repeal (or a yes vote on the initiative) is not very good. Generally successful ballot initiatives should be higher than 60% now. IE. I would rather be on the side of the well funded NO campaign than the poorly funded YES. Initiative are not candidate elections.

Direct democracy is clearly not working. Have there been any serious attempts to eliminate the proposition system? I can't find any...

The Probolsky poll actually shows retention of the gas tax and the crosstabs show strong opposition to Prop 6 among Dems. Although still too early.
