That's my problem with all versions of the Vallco project - they all worsen the housing shortage by adding far more jobs than homes. The original proposal only got to 2/3rds residential to meet SB35 by including massive amounts of residential parking.

I hear what you’re saying, but if the jobs/housing ratio is better than the rest of the city, and if it has set-aside below market units, I think it’s still think it will help more than hurt. Of course a different project could help more…

That's starting to sound like asking for the highest percentage rather than number of affordable units...people live in a unit, not a ratio :)

Well, sure, but I’m just saying that I’m not sure if the project “worsens” the housing situation. I agree a different project might help more!

The Vallco project will bring in a few thousand more workers to Cupertino than it will house. The city doesn't have plans to build a few thousand homes elsewhere. Therefore, those people are going to either displace an existing resident in Cupertino or other nearby city.

Prop 13 split roll will help retire a bunch of old commercial buildings and those will become housing as well.

There's also the little detail of Vallco businesses closing, thereby shifting those jobs elsewhere.

why do they think a new mall there will do better? maybe they are dead?

Because it might have several thousand units of housing and that will generate the consumer base for the mall???

huge consumer base in Cupertino already that doesn't use it and goes to valley fair near as I can tell. I guess we will see. the new little Main Street seems to be doing well.

Also because the old mall was poorly designed for modern uses (old fashioned mall, awkward layout, surrounded by a sea of parking spaces and divided across a very busy street (Wolfe road) and anchored by failing businesses (JC Penny etc)
