Actually it’s more like $900K a unit if you look at @markasaurus work. I’m interested in the second part of @mattregan10’s comment. It’s not enough to say that you want some progressive idealistic policy. You actually have to figure out what it costs and whether the tradeoffs are
Make sense. In CA, our general fund is what - 125B? Universal health care is 400B. Subsidized housing for all low-income families was like 250B in 2015. Unfunded pension liabilities are like 300-400B which we have to honor. Meanwhile K-12 is like 50B/yr. community college is 8B
The housing is enormous — enormous in terms of cost relative to other services we could allocate that money on like Medi-Cal to low-income Californians or higher K-12 spending at 10-11K/student, which is why the governor has been reluctant to allocate to housing subsidies.
Yes, but Tony directly highlights how to lower housing costs (lower interest rates via public banking) and how to fund more affordable development (using earnings from that interest to reinvest directly into more housing). The $700k number came from housing on the shipyard.
It’s definitely believable that public banking could lower borrowing costs on creating housing development but it wouldn’t be enough to make housing *in SF* a human right.
