I've long seen the stat that is costs (x) to build one unit of affordable housing in SF. (Or maybe the Bay. I forget.) Is there a good breakdown of getting to that cost? And how much of that cost could be stricken if the development was taken over by the government itself?

Replying to @RickPaulas
It costs more per unit for non-profits to do it bc their financing stack is more complicated, takes more time to assemble and the public usually demands more amenities like community space which isn’t free.

But independent non-profits have different hoops to jump through than, at least theoretically, government-led development?

This assumes you’ve overcome the largest hurdle, which is public support and will for govt housing, which this country hasn’t really built since 1983. Pt of the reason non-profits do it now is bc HUD/Fed govt stopped supporting it a generation ago and these local orgs stepped in

The government is implicitly behind most housing in one way or another in this country, I meant government built and managed housing.
