I've been enjoying @hayesdavenport & @safrazie's "LA Podcast," & if you want to understand how truly effed housing in CA is, I highly recommend the discussion of Proposition 13 beginning at ~43m https://lapodcast.simplecast.fm/84770605  (also including @awalkerinLA!)

I forget which of them said it, but basically, "Wealthy homeowners in CA voted to effectively eliminate their own property taxes and then wondered why the school system started to suck" is just a devastatingly simple explanation of how this state works

This is an inaccurate rendition of history. Prop 13 passed 2-1, and while the wealthy did support it more than others, it was well supported across the income spectrum and by renters also. Please learn the history here, it’s really important! (And yes, I think Prop 13 is bad!)

Do you have the data? I know young people (today’s boomers) voted mostly no.

Sitting in a cafe now and don’t have the data on me, but read the book Tax Revolt: Something for Nothing in California, by David O. Sears. I read it two months ago and learned a lot. (Also read I’m Mad As Hell, by Howard Jarvis for his first hand perspective.)

The data analysis by David Sears is very eye opening.
