This is a bizarre comment for a journalist to make. “No, please let an opaque, highly centralized core of a dozen people or so make consequential and long impactful decisions on the public discourse for us with little transparency or accountability.”https://twitter.com/KurtWagner8/status/1028081116341620736 …

Just feels like we’ve been debating this stuff for YEARS. And punting to public comment feels like a great way to slow this down for a long time and avoid taking full responsibility for whatever the final decision is Here’s the full story https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/10/technology/twitter-free-speech-infowars.html …

I’m not saying Twitter shouldn’t be transparent. These kinds of decisions are just long past due, and it feels like asking the public to weigh in is just another way to kick this problem down the road. This should have happened years ago.

And maybe most importantly, how would the public actually “weigh in” in a productive way?

You seem to want a final, ultimate decision on hate speech to be the product of all of this. I see the process (of public input, decision-making and transparency) as the ultimate product of this conflict.

I guess it just feels like a cop out to me. It’s clear the current policies are insufficient, and I want twitter to take accountability more quickly. I’m not convinced public comment will accomplish that.

This is how governance works. You create a process. You allow public input. You take it into account and make collective decisions on the basis of that input. Business journalists are generally not trained or practiced in understanding this, unlike govt reporters.

But this is probably the weird medium or hybrid it’s going to ultimately end up at given that this country allowed a handful of private companies to monopolize (duopolize?) modern communications infrastructure.

Furthermore, the US is the exception not the rule when it comes to hate speech. The US Supreme Court gives relatively strong First Amendment protections to hate speech compared to other countries (unfortunately).https://www.npr.org/2011/03/03/134239713/France-Isnt-The-Only-Country-To-Prohibit-Hate-Speech …

Also, when people are mad that institutions produce incoherent or contradictory outcomes (whether that’s these companies or governments or other complex orgs), it’s usually because the body politic they govern has contradictory asks and hasn’t resolved it amongst itself...
