But this is probably the weird medium or hybrid it’s going to ultimately end up at given that this country allowed a handful of private companies to monopolize (duopolize?) modern communications infrastructure.

Furthermore, the US is the exception not the rule when it comes to hate speech. Over the very long run, I suspect a series of court cases and rulings may eventually add more definition to these questions and some of these companies may be able to buy-in public will/understanding by being more transparent with their decision-making processes.
