You mean, like those jaw-dropping pensions public sector workers get? Those seem bizarre too. Seems petty to slag others’ benefits. https://twitter.com/markasaurus/status/1021986162414632960 …
When? Looking at details now: https://sfdhr.org/benefits-overview … seems like you get access to city plan but no contribution and then full contributions after 20 years?

A city dept head was telling me this as recently as 2 yrs ago.

That's bizarre because Nato is right. I covered this extensively at the time. Skip down halfway or do a word search for "Prop. B" Or, hell, read it all:http://www.sfweekly.com/news/let-it-bleed-3/ …

It was changed by Prop B in June 2008. People hired before 2009 are under the old plan. The City contributes nothing until you hit 10 years. (wearing my SEIU negotiator hat) https://sfpl.org/pdf/main/gic/elections/June3_2008.pdf …

IMO, public pensions are a successful policy for reducing inequality. Public school teachers who vest in the pension are ineligible for Social Security by some federal law, regardless of how many years they work, so teachers like my mom got screwed by this.
