We should redefine safety net depending on individual economics. Why own a home you can't afford while there are other avenues to invest. A diversified portfolio of stock are a way for us at the bottom to grow a nest egg.

Homeownership is an old model and I think more people and what’s important, families will switch to renting and living in meaningful communities. There so much opportunities to innovate the basic concepts of living like housing models! Renting should be a service.

In the UK we've got a reasonably good security net. The housing bubble just became enrichment on top of that. Same problem still exists.

We did not build for an aging and indigent population. In the mission district of sf we were an rh3 district and then a historic survey was done our blocks were downzoned to rh2 - to add housing we cannot build anything without enduring a planning and neighborhood nightmare.

The current housing crisis in California and especially the Bay Area and refusal by NIMBY’s to boldly change bad public policy may inadvertently help kill housing ownership for this new generation and let new models succeed that don’t involve you owning a home.
