Kevin, this is a way bigger problem in the structure of the media industry itself. Over the last 20 yrs, one of the few areas to thrive is business journalism, where jobs have grown immensely while other deparments have atrophied & which comes from a particular ideological lens.

I remember chatting with some biz journalism colleagues during the recent massive Intel chip flaws (Spectre/Meltdown). Common response: It doesn't matter because Intel has a monopoly on certain types of chips, so this isn't going to impact bottom line as customers have no choice.

This view is basically correct if you're just 'reading the tape' and looking at business performance, but it allows you to miss a whole bunch of important stuff, like: what is so messed up at Intel that these bugs happened? Why don't we have formal disclosure processes? etc

I also encountered this attitude at
@business where it would be hard to get stories on science of AI through editors without explaining 'the business impact'. I found this frustrating as impact of AI is far more profound, eg it highlights contradictions of neoliberalism.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

So then is it wrong to expect business journalists to also have a social conscience, a sense of the greater good? To view with a wider perspective? Or is it business and business only?
