Yup, exactly. If the state needs X dollars for its budget, then every dollar in taxes not paid by some properties will have to be covered by other properties (or other taxes).

it's fascinating to me that a system that punishes people who sell to rebuy ever got implemented.

Kim have you thought about what Boomer death rates will do for Bay Area county tax rolls? Local government could become very well funded as property stock turns over to higher tax newbies. Will be interesting to watch.

And yet some dude named Lebron
@KingJames just decided to move to CA to earn ~$150 Mil over next 4 years when he could have chosen a low-tax or no-tax state (FL or TX) instead. Hmmm. Maybe lifestyle, job opportunities & this thing called "life" are more important than tax rates. -
150M + another 50M in endorsements is a little different than a 50-100K job. I know, it’s hard to comprehend.

I know that everyone wants to hate on the senior status holders under prop 13, but how about being concerned about the huge loophole for commercial property? Fix that, and we fix much of these problems without displacing anyone.

Untrue. U.S. states with higher overall tax burden than CA (NY, NJ, CT, IL) have high and increasing tax rates across the board. These are the poor fiscal role models you'd have us follow.
