Regarding conservatorship and people saying you shouldn't force people into places they don't want to be. So, what is the solution to mentally ill people who are a danger to themselves aimlessly wandering about? To continue letting that happen?https://twitter.com/jrivanob/status/1008916266101325824 …

Listening to a BART scanner for a few minutes, bulk of emergency issues are at Civic Center station, often involving 51/50 persons wandering into the track area. In NYC there was a very graphic video of a mentally deranged man executing himself via the third rail.

I'll fight any policy which seeks to put anyone with a deficiency in an institution, but after having witnessed fighting from regulars in Dwnt SF, those people with a record shouldn't be let out onto the streets if they're suffering from a mental issue and are a reported risk.

Especially for elderly persons who are deficient and w/o help. I took care of my grandmother for four years until she died from Alzheimer's. Her rationality was gone by year 3, and a vegetable by year 4. People in that state should not be wandering on the street.

I hope these conservationships @LondonBreed wants will be akin to mental institutions and not jail-cells for police to throw people in and let them rot. If its the latter, I'll be out there fighting it as if it were any other mayor. But dying out on the streets isnt ok anymore.

A lot of mentally ill people cannot make comprehensive voluntary decisions. Anyone who has taken care of a person whose brain literally died over the course of four years understands that. All the compassion in the world doesnt bring back their voluntary rationale.

My grandma, if she were homeless, with Alzheimer's wandering the street, and being ignored or let go because of some idea of voluntarism, ended up dead, that would be a nightmare. Those folks dont have a support system, nor are making voluntary decisions, thats why they're there.

one of my former co-workers moms died homeless because they could never get her to take services, however, there are still only 1,100 shelter beds for 7,000 people and the shelter waiting list is 3 months long, so.....

The scale and nature of the problem is such that there really needs to be a state-level agency addressing the issue--leaving it to local municipalities guarantees underfunding and inequitable service provision

Thus confirming its a state problem. Or at least the solution should involve multiple counties of the Bay Area.

One of the reasons we need more supportive senior housing is they can often house wards of the state (the term for conservees) using medicaid funds. But if we don’t build the supportive housing, it’s a problem.

Well for these people who are frequent visitors to ER and prison, I think the idea is that money could be diverted from there... It's kinda a diff issue than overall shelter shortage, there aren't many folks like this really.
