West Coast Americans have it backward. The nice weather doesn't attract homeless people here. The nice weather causes voters to absolve themselves of providing a right to shelter with adequate funding and resources for people without housing the way that East Coast cities do.https://twitter.com/dillonliam/status/1007004501524398080 …

A @UCLA study also just found a strong link between high housing costs and homelessness. Also takes aim at myths I hear all the time, such as the majority of homeless residents are mentally ill or drug addicted. And that homeless move here for the weather http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ucla-anderson-forecast-20180613-story.html … pic.twitter.com/COM1Bd8RZp

I mean, it's pretty obvious from the data. Our overall homelessness numbers are not that much larger than other major metros. But you can see that the unsheltered/sheltered ratios are astoundingly different on the West Coast: https://www.spur.org/publications/urbanist-article/2017-10-23/homelessness-bay-area …pic.twitter.com/FVmYPy8LlD

That said, I wouldn't advocate replacing permanent supportive housing (aimed at older, disabled, chronically ill people) with more shelter beds (temporary). Half of @SF_HSH's budget goes toward what would have likely been federally provided public/social housing a generation ago.

In case, anyone is curious about what I mean about the difference between the East Coast and West Coast approach to homelessness, you should read the history of the Callahan vs. Carey case: http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/our-programs/advocacy/legal-victories/the-callahan-legacy-callahan-v-carey-and-the-legal-right-to-shelter/ …

But I would also say that the NYC approach still does leave a lot to be desired too. Unlike in SF where homelessness is visible downtown by the retail district/CBD, NYC shelters are concentrated out of sight, out of mind in outer boroughs:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/18/nyregion/homelessness-step-by-step.html …

Those L.A. numbers seem very strangely low. (Anecdotal but there was an SF-style tent city outside Gold's Gym in Venice when I was there Tuesday which would have been unthinkable when I lived there a decade ago.)

Yeah, the LA numbers look weird. If I take their PIT count (53,000) and divide it by the 10 million county population, I get like 0.5% https://www.lahsa.org/documents?id=2059-2018-greater-los-angeles-homeless-count-presentation.pdf …

Average temp in January might help explain this.
